MeWho
BiLANȚUL TROFIC
The exhibition The Trophic Balance introduces a new series of diverse figurative works by the artist MeWho as a result of a creative exercise undertaken during the current year.
The curatorial concept brings to the fore an artistic experiment that starts from the idea of the hierarchy specific to the food chain, that ecological system where distribution is crucial and where identity is constantly questioned. The food chain defines the relationship of interdependence and the transfer of energy and matter from small to large between plants, animals and people – a succession present in the visual itinerary proposed by MeWho, but an abstract succession, in the form of a BiLant or a relational and rational analysis, subtly ironized, reflecting cultural imagination and, at the same time, the humans’ place in the universe.
The trophic balance created by MeWho refers to a series of social and cultural issues. The artist proposes a critical and lucid analysis of reality given or created by humans, not as an imprisonment into the work itself, but as a recontextualisation through intriguing and complex structures. He begins this process directly from the titles, for instance Inorog 4A / Unicorn 4A, Scufița Roșie și Lupul / Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, or Monkey Business. Each piece features a specific compositional element, either added or integrated, presenting a dislocated cultural and social narrative, position movements in the food chain, changes and breaking points in the narrative sequence which invites to a reflection upon sense and logic.
Working with various materials, such as liquid marble, metal, resin, ceramic, wood, brass, acrylic, MeWho creates pieces that are surprising through a continuous spontaneity. This new series presents an innovative typology in the artist’s practice, if in his previous works the theme of the child was recurrent, his recent pieces are part of the personalised heterotrophs category. A fresh element in the artist’s recent practice is the mini-series of the four seasons, works in which the visual story is represented by the artist through line and colour, essentializing the composition.
The totality of the works in the exhibition thus create a social satire where the absurd and illogical are defined by the specific elements that give, moreover, the playful satirical note, while maintaining the seriousness of the message.
MeWho studied at the Department of Sculpture at the University of Arts in Bucharest, with prof. Mircea Spataru and Darie Dup. He participated in group projects but he also has created his personal exhibitions, his artistic activity emerging predominantly through sculpture. Looking at society in a subjective and at the same time critical way, MeWho is inspired from how he feels about contemporary life, towards a potential future marked by the current social context.
