Forest Dwarfs

When I was living in France in the 90s, I heard about an organization that “kidnapped” dwarfs from people’s gardens and “released” them into the forests. I wonder what happened to those “liberated” dwarfs? …How did they metamorphose? …Are they happier there, in freedom?

In 1992, in Paris, I drew the first dwarfs in black ink, and in 1993 I continued with a new series in tempera colors. After a relatively long period, I resumed this theme by painting the first dwarfs on canvas, which I exhibited in Berlin in 2011. In this exhibition I tried to develop a dialogue between several types of plastic solutions, with subtle ways of transitioning from one to the other, and through common elements to give unity to this new series of works. For me, dwarfs represent an inexhaustible source, through which I can access various pictorial universes.

The motif of the Dwarfs is an attempt to approach a timeless theme in an uninhibited manner. Behind the apparently comical image of buffoons lies the complexity of their nature and the inherent sadness stemming from the fact that they are not understood. They defy us by exposing their nudity in a gesture of frond. These “distorted” bodies have always fascinated me. The Dwarfs tell us about a world that is decomposing with a smile on the lips; they are situated on the border between the real and the imaginary and they become a way to escape the mundanity of daily life.

I also used the abnormality of their bodies as a response to the perfection of the human body in ancient and Renaissance art, without trying to devalue it. In this creative endeavor, however, for me the game and its multiple facets remain the priority.
